In June of 2014 the Society for Protective Coatings – Gulf Coast Region (SSPC-GCR) was formed with one purpose in mind —

to “EDUCATE AND TRAIN” blasters and painters for a better quality of work.

The region spans from the Louisiana/Texas border to Mobile, Alabama.  It is divided into four sectors:

CAJUN COUNTRY – Lake Charles to New Iberia, LA

BAYOU COUNTRY – Morgan City to Port Fourchon, LA

PLANTATION COUNTRY – Baton Rouge, New Orleans to the Louisiana/Mississippi border.

GOLDEN COAST – Mississippi and Alabama

Scholarships are awarded for:

COATING APPLICATION SPECIALIST (CAS) certification which is designed to certify individual craft workers including classroom and hands-on training.  Surface preparation and coating application will be discussed according to the SSPC coating application program.

C-7 is a course designed for contractor personnel who wish to obtain certification or for others who wish to learn about dry abrasive blast cleaning of steel.  It covers principles of surface preparation, surface cleanliness, surface profile, dust and debris control along with differnt types of abrasives.  Students can be certified or receive a certificate of attendance.

C-12 is a course which assesses the skills of experienced sprayers with airless/conventional spraying in the Industrial and Marine environment.  Candidates are certified through a brief written and practical hands on skill assessment.  This course is designed to train and certify Industrial/Marine applicators to operate airless/conventional spray equipment.

The recipients of the 2014 C.A.S. Scholarships were:

Mr. Tito Tate – Safway Group

Mr. Rickey Roland – Point Eight Power

Mr. Kenard McKever – Frisco

Mr. Jeffery McCardle – CCS

The applicants were selected according to sector divisions and length of service in the industry.

Scholarship recipients will receive a full course of the C.A.S. Program along with the following amenities:

♦ Hotel accommodations paid for by the SSPC Gulf Coast Chapter (these are double rooms shared by two winners per room).

♦ $50 per diem food allowance provided by our chapter for the duration of the course.

♦ One-year membership of SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings provided by Ms. Terry Sowers, Director of Member Services, SSPC Corporate Office in Pittsburgh, PA.
